Inside Cover, acrylic ink, micron pen & gold marker on cardboard, 7 x 10", 2012. |
The horses on the inside cover are the four bronze horse statues on the roof of Basilica San Marco.
I really like the way the gold paint picks up light. I went over the whole cover with a gloss varnish to protect it.

And, here's a look at the front cover with the cut-out speech bubble.
I have LOTS more pages to fill, but it definitely fells good to get the first page done. Did you sign up for the 2013 Sketchbook Project? What is your theme? If you didn't, you really should!
Whoa! That looks soooo good Sarah! I already loved the outside cover, but you made the inside look like a treasure using the gold paint. The horses are beautiful and I like the way you've combined pen and paint in your first page. 'Andiamo' is just perfect as a first page, I can't wait to see more.
ReplyDeleteI'm indecisive about my theme, but seeing your progress here, makes me want to start filling my sketchbook too!
The horse statues with gold marker are amazing! I love the way you pick out the detail only where it's needed; that first page of the entrance to the piazza is perfect. I'm guessing ice cream is going to play a major role in a sketchbook about Venice..
ReplyDeleteI had a lot of fun with a couple art house co-op journals a few years ago. I love your textural approach. The cut outs and outlines over a patterned background. Cool! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove the horses with gold stars, beautiful rich detail, linework and colors. Really like the way you handled light and shadow in the "Andiamo", great impression of a sunny day!
ReplyDeleteLove the horses! Their faces have so much personality. And you first page is wonderful, so much depth!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to find you drawing an Italian-themed sketchbook, I'm curious to see what will come next! :)
ReplyDeleteI've been there twice also, and now, thanks to your gorgeous drawings, I'll have to go again! Looking forward to seeing more!
ReplyDeleteI just want to say I loooove your your cover!! The horses with the gold stars...Wow... looks amazing, and the interaction with the inside of the sketchbook is awesome with the die cut... genius. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks awesome, would love to flick through it! :)
ReplyDeleteYour work has some touches of yesterday, but seems totally in touch with today. I personally own about 3,00 children's books and I can not wait until I find your name in print near me.

The horses with the golden stars look really beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love the sense of adventure I get from the cover and the first page, seeing this sketchbook finished is gonna be a great experience :)
I love the way it's coming along! The horses are awesome, and it's such a good idea to rebound it with thicker/better paper. I haven't signed up for the sketchbook project. I've never done one even though every year I think I should.
ReplyDeleteYou should! It's so much fun!
DeleteI love travel sketchbooks and you're doing a beautiful job of it!
ReplyDeleteI did a paper cutting for my sketchbook project. I didn't expect to finish it so soon but I'm starting school soon anyway so I'm grateful for that.
